Lanzarote Tourism Down 18% Year To Date
The number of tourists visiting the holiday island of Lanzarote continues to fall.
According to new figures just released by the Spanish airport operators AENA.
Who have reported a half year drop in foreign arrivals of 18%. With the British market – Lanzarote´s largest - down by over 85,000 holidaymakers for the year to date.
The latest AENA figures reveal that tourist visits to the Island of Fire continued to fall last month. Down by 24.45% versus June 2008. Whilst the island has now welcomed a total of 148,608 fewer foreign guests than during the first six months of last year.
The British market remains the worst affected. Down by nearly 27% last month.
As the impact of the credit crunch and the depreciation of sterling against the euro combine to discourage UK consumer spending on holidays abroad. Whilst other key markets such as Germany and Eire are all deeply affected too. With arrivals down last month by 16.43% and 24.18% respectively.
Declining visitor numbers are taking their toll on virtually every sector of the island’s economy. Which is heavily dependent on tourism. Local hoteliers and overseas owners of Lanzarote villas and apartments are all having to cope with reduced occupancy levels. Whilst the Lanzarote property market remains largely becalmed. With transactions few and far between – despite recent falls in property prices.
