Alleged Overseas Property Fraud

The Belfast Telegraph report on an apparent overseas property scam which has resulted in Bernadette McGeary facing charges of obtaining money by deception. The alleged scam involved both life style buyers and overseas property investors who bought properties in Spain.

 

The property buyers paid half the cash up front for their Spanish homes but they never received their holiday homes or their money back.

 

McGeary, from Navan Manor in Armagh, appeared before Dungannon Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with three counts of obtaining a money transfer by deception some time between April 1 and December 31, 2006.

 

She is further charged with two counts of entering an arrangement to acquire criminal property between February 1 and 28, 2006.

An investigating officer told the court that she believed she could connect the accused to the charges.

 

McGeary, who strenuously denies the charges, was released on continuing bail on provision that her passport remains surrendered and she reports to her local police station once a week. She is due to appear again at Dungannon courthouse on February 11
