Property in Costa Almeria Spain

The Spanish province of Almeria is one of the prettiest and most unspoiled coastlines in the country. Centered on the capital city of Almeria, this is the driest part of Spain and one of the driest in all of Europe, but has many spectacular sites, beaches and attractions along its 300+ kilometers of coast.

Most interest in this region is based on the capital city of Almeria, around which the major tourist resorts are located. But the coast extends from the border with Murcia on the northeast to Adra in the southwest and has much to offer those who are interested in buying property or taking a holiday here. The weather here is warm and dry year round, with over 300 days of sunshine. The average temperature is 27º C in summer and 15º C in winter, which makes Almeria an all-year round holiday destination and a great place to live. Inland are many greenhouses where much of the fruit and vegetables for the country are produced.

To the east of the city of Almeria is the rugged and desolate coast of the Cabo de Gara – Nijar natural park. The coast is fascinating, and many of the coves can only be reached on foot. This area is very popular with nature lovers and back-packers, and the most popular coastal village is San Jose. Most visitors flock to the holiday resorts to the east and west of Almeria. Many beaches, marinas, hotels and sports centres provide lots to keep holiday travelers happy in the resort towns of Mojacar to the east, and Anguadulce, Roquetas de Mar and Almerimar to the west of the city.

The city of Almeria is Andalucia's most eastern capital. In recent years it has grown tremendously as a popular tourist destination and place for international real estate buyers. Almeria holds a great deal of charm and is steeped in history, going back to the 10th century and Moorish times. The city is located at the foot of a mountain range which is crowned by the magnificent Alcazaba, an Arab fortress built by the Caliph of Cordoba. In addition to its historic sites, Almeria is well-known for its restaurants and local cuisine. The best place for reasonably priced restaurants and bars is around the Puerta de Purchena at the end of Paseo de Almeria. In the old town you can find many good bars and cafes near to the town hall.

Sports lovers will find much to keep them busy on the Costa Almeria. There are a number of good golf courses, and the warm weather makes this a favorite for scuba divers. Playa Serena is the most well-known course in the region, and is located in Roquetas de Mar, about 8 kilometers southwest of Almeria. Almeria Golf Club, La Envia Golf Club and the spectacular Desert Springs Golf Resort in Vera are a few other courses in the region.

Property on the Costa Almeria is a nice mix of old and new. For those who want some land and a place that can be renovated, there are some older properties for very low prices, even under £50,000. Just inland from the sea, there are also a number of apartments and off-plan properties that are available and under construction for quite reasonable prices. For example, in the town of Cuevas del Almanzora, north of Almeria and just a few kilometers from the beach, are several new apartment buildings under construction with units available for prices as low as £57,000. Not far from here, just inland from the Garrucha Beach, is another new development of 2 bedroom units that are available from £113,000, and another luxury gated development as well.

For those who have a little more to spend and want a villa or luxury apartment, there are also many options along this stretch of coast. In Huercal-Overa are new villas under construction beginning at €157,850. In the country village of Los Higuerales is a new development of villas beginning at 240,000. At the higher end of things, there are new homes set along the beach of El Playazo, beginning at £810,345. Not being one of the more well known of the Spanish costas, the Costa Almeria has plenty of property to offer at reasonable prices, and pretty much the same weather and advantages of the more expensive locations further to the south.

The Almeria Airport (LEI) is where most travelers to the Costa Almeria arrive in the region. It is located about 10 kilometers east of the city and is the second busiest airport in Andalucía, behind Malaga Airport (AGP). A number of discount airlines serve Almeria, including easyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair and Monarch Airlines, among others, making it easy to get to. Most UK airports have direct flights here, particularly during the summer holiday season. The airport is convenient to the entire Costa Almeria, plus there are other airports surrounding the region as well.
