Property Costa De La Luz Spain

The Costa de la Luz, or Coast of Light, is a gorgeous stretch of coast on the southwestern part of Andalucía and Spain. The coast itself stretches for over 200 kilometers and gets plenty of sunlight and great weather year round. The beaches here are sandy, with a finer sand than much of the rest of the Spanish coast, and they are broad and scenic, particularly in the western part of the region. This is a very nice stretch of land for those who want something a little different than the normal tourist attractions and resorts, but still with the beach and ocean nearby.

The Costa dela Luz runs from the border with Portugal in the west of Spain to the southernmost point at Tarifa. It is divided into two sections, one in the east which covers the Cadiz Province and the western portion which covers the province of Huelva. The two provinces take their names from the major cities, and capitals, within them. Cadiz has a population of approximately 130,000 residents and is about 125 kilometers south of Sevilla. Huelva, with a population of nearly 150,000 residents is close to the border with Portugal and is about 100 kilometers west of Sevilla.

The two provinces that make up the Costa de la Luz divide the coast almost in half, and are not easily accessible from each other. The coast, though, is home to some of the best beaches and natural scenery in the country. Huelva is an industrial city, but out on the coast there are a number of great beaches. Near the Donana National Park are several long, quiet beaches that are great to spend a few days relaxing on. The Playa de Castilla along this stretch of coast has many kilometers of beach, while to the west of Huelva City is the Barra de El Rompido.

The western end of the Costa de la Luz in Huelva Province runs from the Guadiana river that separates Portugal from Spain to the Guadalquivir river in the east. This section is not quite as spectacular as the Cadiz portion and its cliffs and coves, but it has long, unspoiled sandy beaches with pine woods and sand dunes and many protected coastal reserves. Although exposed, the beaches are not as windswept as the Cadiz section of the coast. The shoreline is punctuated by small fishing ports and modern resorts popular with mainly Spanish visitors.

The Donana National Park is a spectacular natural attraction and is between the two parts of the coast. It is home to several endangered species, including the Spanish Imperial Eagel and Iberian Lynx. The Bay of Cadiz is a nice area, and further to the south are some cliffs and great views. The salt marshes of Barbate and the seaside cliffs at La Breña, which are both within the La Breña-Barbate Natural Park are another pretty and scenic area to see.  The southern beaches are focused around Cadiz, with La Playa de la Caleta being the best-loved beach of Cádiz. It is the beach of the Old City, situated between the two castles of San Sebastian and Santa Catalina. This is a smaller beach, but you might recognize it from the James Bond movie Die Another Day, for which it served as the set for several of the Cuban scenes. La Playa de la Victoria in the newer part of Cádiz is the beach most visited by tourists and is nearly three kilometers long. It is a great family beach with few rocks and a small surf, and it’s not far from many shops and restaurants. Sports lovers will enjoy the Costa de la Luz, with its numerous golf courses and great water sports. This stretch of coast is known for its great surfing, sailing, kite surfing and windsurfing. There are also many golf courses, and if, for some reason, you can’t find enough here you are right next to the Costa del Sol and the Algarve, both with many more great courses. Villa Nueva Golf Resort is a relatively new course that has become popular in the region. A little inland is the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, host of the 2008 Spanish Open as well as the 2004 World Cup of Golf. Other clubs in the region include the Nuevo Portil Golf Club, the Bellavista Golf Club and many others. For a complete listing of courses, visit www.golfdelaluz.

If you want to be near the ocean, but don’t mind owning property a little inland, then there are many places on or near the Costa de la Luz that can be had for very little. Many of the small towns inland have older homes and villas, some for under £30,000! Staying inland, you can get larger properties in good shape for not much more. If you are looking for a country estate, then there are plenty of places here as well, and the sky is the limit as to what you can buy and pay. For homes that are close to the beach, there are some off-plan properties as well as existing units available as well. The Costa de la Luz isn’t as built up as the other costas, but there are many nice, reasonably priced homes available in the cities or inland.

There are a number of options for those who are flying to this region of Spain. The major airport for the Costa de la Luz is Jerez Airport (XRY), located just north of the town of Jerez de la Frontera. It is approximately 45 kilometers north of Cadiz, and some 80 kilometers south of Sevilla. Jerez Airport hosts some 1.5 million passengers a year, and is convenient for most of the coast. Several discount carriers fly here, and during the summer travel season the flights are regular and reasonably priced.

There are also convenient airports in Sevilla (SVQ) and Gibraltar (GIB). Sevilla Airport is probably the easiest place to fly into for those who are headed to the western part of the Costa de la Luz around Huelva. It is a major Spanish airport and handles a large volume of traffic year round. Often, travelers to Huelva will now fly into Faro Airport in Portugual (FAO) and take a shuttle across the border. Since both countries are EU members, this is an easy process. Gibraltar Airport is a relatively small facility, with flights only to the UK and Spain. For those headed to the southern end of the coast, this is the closest airport.
